Ann Richards (nee Wild) < Toronto, ON Canada - Thursday, June 17, 2004 at 14:51:08 (EDT) My war Active servicewas in the Western Desert & Middle East campaign from start in1940. To Afrika Corps final surrender .. Heard about the "D" day landings whilst lying on a sunny beach in Beruit on convalescence . Awaiting the boat back to Blighty after four years absence. About three weeks later we saw a news reel of the landings. It was on a small landing craft going in right opposite a small house on the beach .There was a full face shot of a soldier for a few seconds. Thin face appearance with prominent ears .His face was absolutely devoid of any emotions. In front of him is a man with a a ladder right behind the ramp door. A hand reaches out from behind holds our "mans" right shoulder. As if to say"Good luck mate". The Ramp drops down & shows clearly this small white house & as the men move out the picture changes. A voice from the audience of troops behind me stated out loud ."I hope those poor bastards made it"!!. In the years since I saw that film clip in Aug 44. I have seen it repeated at least two hundred times in TV features of "The Invasion" I see that soldier & always wondered .Who is he! "DID HE MAKE IT ".? What happened.! Now I want to find out the answer to my curiousity as that particular soldier, was, & always will be my "D" day buddy. Although I lost close relatives & friends. When we parade on special occasions with medals & regalia, I remember that unknown soldier. In the book."D"day by Lance Goddard. at the top left of the front cover is a photo of the land ing craft& at the bottom of page123 are two photo's of the landing craft along with a description of the hell they went in to. They do not show the man I am seeking & I have never been able to find one. My latest resarch states that the photos were taken by a Sgt Bill Grant of the 2nd battalion film & photo unit& the troops were of the Queens Own Rifles. I would be very grateful for any assistance than can be offered. Let us find out .who this soldier was, or we pray is. please "E" mail me. rayealey@kos.net. Canada - Sunday, June 13, 2004 at 20:42:43 (EDT) My uncles, Charles Nicholl Bradshaw and Gordon Bradshaw served with the QOR in World War II. Charles Bradshaw was I believe at Canadian General Headquarters in or near London England during the time leading up to and on D-Day. I would love to obtain any information about what he was doing at GHQ, and what his eventual rank was (Major ?). The little information I have is that he was "involved in planning". Gordon Bradshaw was I believe, an officer (?) and landed at Normandy. My late Mother (his sister) told me Gordon went on to Holland and was involved in the liberation of parts of Holland in the spring of 1945 (Amsterdam ?). I waould be very pleased to receive information such as the Company he was in, when he went ashore at Normandy (was it D-Day or after) and what rank he ended up with. My late brother Peter Freyseng, attended University of Toronto and was in the Canadian Officersd Training Corps, while at university. I believe he was a memeber of QOR with the the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Would love to know how long he was a member of QOR and what his final rank was. "Hi there Limey" He yelled with a grin "Hallo" I replied "How've you bin? go inside and stow your gear, Bring your pals and we'll go for a beer" From this moment a friendship grew. We ate we trained, and socialised too. Then one day the orders came, Realising now, this wasn't a game. We boarded ships, then on our way And during the night we gathered to pray, Landing Craft lowered seven miles from land, We scrambled down nets, hand over hand. Into the boats a fearsome task. Look after us Lord thats all I ask, The sea was stormy, we had a rough ride. I looked at my buddy, who sat by my side. "Take care Limey, you'll do fine, Good luck Canuck old friend of mine" The ramp went down. we plunged into the swell. The beach before us a living hell. Our feet on the ground, we dashed to the wall From the corner of my eye I saw him fall Again and Again I still ask why My friend from Toronto why did he die ?
